Vernon S. Briggs Jr. Obituary
Vernon S. Briggs Jr., age 84 years of Wyoming, Mich. and formerly of the Hudson area, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Lifehouse Assisted Living in Grand Rapids.

He was born on February 27, 1929, in Hillsdale, the son of Vernon S. and Idella E. (Hough) Briggs, Sr.

Vernon graduated from Addison High School in 1947 and attended Michigan State University Lumber Merchandising Short Course and annual Michigan Assessors Association courses.

He enlisted in the National Guard in 1948, transferred to the Army Reserve in 1955 and was Honorably Discharged in 1958 as a Second Lieutenant.

Vernon married Wanda Jeanne Harmon on August 27, 1950 at the Wheatland Congregational Church. She preceded him in death on August 8, 2004.

Vernon worked for K. L. Boley and Sons Lumber Co. in Addison for nearly thirty years, eighteen years as a football and basketball referee and fourteen years as Hillsdale County Equalization Director. He was very active with local government serving on many boards and associations which included: Wheatland Township Supervisor, Assessor and Trustee, Michigan Association of Equalization Directors, President, Board Member and Member, Addison Community Hospital, Board Chairman, Executive Committee and Board Member, member of Lenawee, Hillsdale and Jackson Counties Referee Association, Addison Kiwanis, Hillsdale County Republican Executive Board, member of Hannan-Colvin Post #180 American Legion in Hudson, member of Wheatland Congregational Church and the Hudson First United Methodist Church.

Vernon enjoyed fishing, hunting any all outdoor activities.

Vernon is survived by four children; John (Sarah) Briggs of Hillsdale, Janet (Eric) Briggs-Patzer of Portola Valley, CA, Sara (Judd) Webster of Wyoming and Julie Beach of Lebanon, IN, six grandchildren; John (Jamie) Webster, Kyle (Danielle) Webster, Elizabeth (Jared) DeBacker, Adam Briggs, Matthew Patzer and Skye Beach, three great-grandchildren; Gavin, Desmond and Leonidas, special friend and companion, Anita Schultz of Manitou Beach, three sisters; Mary Woodby, Marjie (Harold) Ellis all of North Ft. Myers, FL and Phyllis Henson of Clayton and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister, Joan Savage and two brothers; Dean and James Briggs.

Funeral Services for Vernon will be held at 1:00 P.M Saturday, November 9, 2013, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with Rev. Mark Johnston officiating.

Interment will follow at Evergreen-Burt Cemetery in Ransom Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan.

Visitation will be on Friday, November 8, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
