Castel III, Albert Edward passed away in Columbus, OH on November 14th, 2014 at the age of 86.

Albert is survived by his daughter, Ann Davis (Kevin) of Columbus, OH and his son, Charles Castel of Queens, NY and grandchildren, Shea Davis, Noah Davis, and Drew Davis. He is preceded in death by his wife, George Ann Castel and his parents, Albert and Dorothy Castel.

Albert was born on November 11, 1928 in Wichita, KS. He attended Wichita State University and was awarded a B.A. in 1950 and an M.A in 1951. In 1955 Albert received his Ph.D. in History and Political Science from the University of Chicago.

After receiving his Ph.D. Albert joined the U.S. Army and was a Special Agent in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps until 1957. After receiving an honorable discharge Albert began his career as a professor of history. He taught first at UCLA, then at Waynesburg (PA) College before accepting a position in 1960 at Western Michigan University where he remained until he retired in 1991.

After retirement Albert and George Ann moved to Hillsdale, MI and remained there until 2008 when they moved to Columbus, OH to be close to their daughter.

In addition to his teaching, Albert was regarded as one of the leading authorities on the Civil War in the West, a field which he pioneered with the publication of "A Frontier State of War: Kansas, 1861-1865" (1958); "William Clark Quantrill: His Life and Times" (1062); and "General Sterling Price and the Civil War in the West" (1968). Thirteen additional books and over 100 articles followed including "Decision in the West: The Atlanta Campaign of 1864" which won the Lincoln Prize for best Civil War book published in 1992.

Albert's ashes will be interned in a private family ceremony on February, 8th 2015 at Holy Trinity Anglican Parish in Hillsdale, MI with Reverend Duane C. Beauchamp officiating.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mayfair Village Retirement Community and Sunrise on the Scioto for the care they provided Albert since his move to Columbus. The family is also grateful to Methodist ElderCare Hospice for the care they provided Albert in the last weeks of his very remarkable life.
