Catherine M. (Murray) Baker Obituary
Catherine M. Baker, age 64, of Hillsdale, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor as a result of cancer.

Catherine was born in the Upper Peninsula city of Norway, Michigan on December 23, 1948, the daughter of Girrard and Gloria Murray. She was a 1967 graduate of North Central High School in Powers-Spalding, Michigan. In 1971, she graduated from Northern Michigan University, in Marquette, Michigan with a teaching and business degree.

In 1973, after a brief teaching position, she went to work in the gift department at H. J. Gelzer and Son, Inc. Over 40 years, she came to manage the furniture, housewares and gift departments enabled with and because of the help of many fellow workers at the store; as a result, she developed many lasting friendships in the community, as well as, in business. She was a great lover of life, work and extended family. With great strength, she accepted her passing.

Local survivors include her husband of 43 years, Grant Gelzer Baker; aunt, Jacqueline Gelzer Morris and sister and brother-in-law, Jon-Jay (Ross) Pechta and family. Also surviving is her mother, Gloria (Bill) Murray Asselin of Norway, Michigan; two sisters, Elizabeth Murray of Chandler, Arizona and Ann Marie (Mark) Rappette of Green Bay, Wisconsin and two brothers, Richard (Sally) Murray of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Thomas Murray of Hermansville, Michigan.

Catherine was preceded in death by her father, Girrard Murray in 1979; an infant brother, Girrard Murray Jr. and her mother-in-law, Ola Gelzer Baker.

Memorial services for Catherine Baker will be Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Dr. Charles Johnson officiating. Interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale at a later date. The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday from 6-9 P.M. at the funeral home.
