Doris M. Schmidt, 93 of St.Ignace , formerly of Hillsdale, MI passed away peacefully Saturday evening, February 1, 2014. She was born July 24,1920 in Allen County, Indiana to Donald and Grace (Holopeter) Rundles.She married A. Carl Schmidt in 1941, and he died January 16,2000.

Doris and Carl made their home in Hillsdale, MI where they raised 4 ,sons. She earned an A.B. Degree from Hillsdale College, Majoring in Business Education with Minors in English and Spanish. She held a Permanent Teachers Cert. in Michigan and Florida. She taught Spanish and English at Hillsdale High School and at the English Center in Miami to Cuban Refugees. Doris was a lifetime Republican, and 1st V.P of the Republican Women's Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, past President of Eastside Welcome Wagon Club in Ft. Lauderdale and actiive in the A.A.U.W. She was elected to Lamplighters Honorary at Hillsdale College in 1959, and in 1939 was the Queen of General Motors Festival, an office held for 1 year. She is a Women Commissioner of Hillsdale College, a well known high school teacher, and a caregiver for many years. Her family was very important to her, and she saw all four of her children graduate from college. Doris was a resident of St.Ignace for the past 6 years, all of which were in extended care, because of health.

Doris is survived by 4 sons; David and Sandy Schmidt of St.Ignace, Stephen (Bonnie) Schmidt of Egg Harbor, New Jersey, Daniel (Rae) Schmidt, of Steubenviille, Ohio and Joseph Schmidt of Prescott, Arizona; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters, and an infant brother.

Funeral services for Doris Schmidt will be Monday, April 28, 2014, at 12:00 noon at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Hillsdale with Fr. Robert Walton officiating. Private family interment will take place at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale. Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
