Esther Marie (Swayze) Kennedy Obituary
Esther Marie Kennedy, 95, of Hillsdale, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Golden Years Adult Foster Care in Osseo. She was born March 30, 1922 in Minden City, Michigan to Melvin and Loretta (Schumacher) Swayze. She married Ralph Kennedy on May 6, 1944 and he preceded her in death on July 22, 1996.
Esther graduated from Deckerville High School in 1939. She earned her rural teaching certificate, Bachelor's and Master's Degree from Eastern Michigan University. Esther was a beloved teacher who started her 32 year career in a one room school house, later retiring from Gier Elementary in 1978. During WWII, she put her teaching career on hold to go to work for the Willow Run Defense Plant in Wayne, Michigan where she started as a riveter. When they found out she had a college degree, she became a painting supervisor for the B-29 Bombers for the duration of the war. Esther will be remembered for being a loving and giving person, whose family was her pride and joy. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Rosary Altar Society.
Survivors include her children, John R. Kennedy of Hillsdale and Vicki (Michael) Hostetter of Reading; three grandchildren, Lisa Landis, Gregory (Katherine) Hostetter and Sarah Kennedy (John Taylor); six great-grandchildren and sister, Delores Weber of Bay City, Michigan.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; step-father, Wilmont Dafoe and siblings, Jeanette Swayze, Dorothy Kross and Glenn Dafoe.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Esther Kennedy will be Friday, November 10, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale with Fr. David Reamsnyder officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale.
