Fred A. Newton Sr., age 66 of Liberty Township, Clarklake, was called home to the Lord and passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, in Somerset Center.

He was born on April 29, 1950, in Pineville, Kentucky to Freeman and Genell (Long) Newton. He married Mary Ann Prebes on June 5, 1970, in Taylor, Michigan, and she survives.

Fred lived his early life in Taylor, and completed his education at Dearborn High School. He then lived in the Clarklake area for the past 27 years. Fred was a veteran of the Viet Nam War, serving in the United States Marines. He worked for the Ford Motor Company in Livonia for 31 years, retiring in 2003, where he was U.A.W. Assistant Fire Chief for the Livonia Transmission Plant. Fred was a former member of the Liberty Township Fire Department for 18 years and was a Captain and EMT for the Somerset Township Fire Department for 8 years. He was a State Certified Training Coordinator, sharing his passion for the service with the students of Jackson and Hillsdale County. Fred was an avid hunter, a member of the N.R.A. and he enjoyed being a husband, father, and papa.

Surviving besides his wife Mary Ann is one son, Fred (Candace) Newton, Jr. of Sault Ste. Marie, one daughter, Renea (Stacy) Rainey of Spring Arbor, five grandchildren (Brianna, Emma, Elijah, Sidney, Brady) Fred's mother Genell Newton of Taylor, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Freeman and one brother, Jerry.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday January 2, 2017, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, followed by a fire procession from the funeral home to Somerset Beach Campground Field House, where Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2017, with Pastor David Luke and Pastor Larry Owen officiating. Military Rites by the Jonesville American Legion Post #195 and Fire Service Honors will be performed. Cremation will follow the service.
