George Schutes Obituary

JONESVILLE - George E. Schutes, 86, of Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Drews Country Living in Hillsdale. He was born February 26, 1930 in Elkhart, Indiana to Gerhard & Ruth (Baumgarten) Schutes. George was married June 10, 1956 to Joan Hoeppner and she survives.

George was a former business teacher retiring from the Hillsdale Community Schools. He was also a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsdale. George received his bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana University. He was a member of the U.S. Navy serving in active duty from 1954-1958 and a member of the Navy Reserves for 31 years. He received his private pilots license at the age of 16. George had many loves in his life, his Lord, church, family, friends, flying and his horses.

Surviving besides his wife Joan of almost 60 years are three children, Kathleen (Michael) Hoffman of Elkhart. Gail (Allen-deceased) Schultz of Hillsdale and Mark (Carolyn) Schutes of Denver, CO; four grandchildren, Kendall (David) Kincaid and Adam Hoffman, both of Fishers, Indiana, Jacob Hoffman of Elkhart and Erica Moore of Jonesville; and a great-granddaughter, Evelyn Kincaid.

George was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Allen, and brother, John.

Funeral services for George Schutes will be Monday, May 9, 2016, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsdale with Pastor Dan Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
