Gordon W. Bell Obituary

HUNTINGTON - Gordon W. Bell, 92 of Huntington was released to his heavenly home at 9:32 pm on Saturday, November 7, 2015, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law Wesley and Jean Bell in Huntington. He is greatly missed by his four sons and their families. Gordon attended all twelve years of school in the Mineral Springs North Dakota School District where he graduated with two other members of his class in June of 1939. After working in the Civil Conservation Corps program as a stone cutter, he traveled by train to the "middle of nowhere" in Upland, Indiana to attend Taylor University. During this time he met and married Lola his wife from Detroit, Michigan. After earning his degree in philosophy, he attended Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. Later he studied at Fuller Theological Seminary. Reverend Bell pastored Methodist Churches in Kentucky, Indiana and North Dakota. In 1951 The Bells joined the India Mission and moved to Hyderabad, India, with their four young sons. They joined the Free Methodist Church in 1957, continuing to serve as missionaries. They also held pastorates in Michigan and Washington. Gordon and Lola were enthusiastic lifelong ambassadors for their Christian faith. They served a total of 20 years in pastorates, 30 years as missionaries in India, and 15 years as chaplain in two nursing homes in Warm Beach and Stanwood Washington. His missionary service in India included village evangelism, coaching pastors, teaching at Union Biblical Seminary and as Board Chairman for Umri Hospital, the primary health resource for hundreds of thousands of rural residents in Central India since 1950.

Mr. Bell was born on December 30, 1922, in a country house near Rising City, Nebraska, a son of William L. and Edith E. (Ullyott) Bell.

He was united in marriage to Lola M. Kelley on August 22, 1944. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2009.

Survivors include four sons: Gordon (Mary) Bell, Jr. of Seattle, WA; Lawrence (Kimi) Bell of San Diego, CA; Wesley (Jean) Bell of Huntington; Dr. Verle (Lois) Bell of Grand Rapids, MI; a brother: Leonard Bell of Bluffton, SC; 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at College Park United Brethren Church, 1945 College Ave., Huntington, Indiana.
