Harry H Phillips Obituary
HILLSDALE - Harry H.Phillips (84), of Hillsdale County, MI, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2016 in Newark, OH. He was born January 14, 1932, in Hillsdale, MI to Earl and Olive (McElroy) Phillips. He was married to Ruth J. Stubli, May 8, 1954, and she survives. They were divorced in 1993.
Harry was a Korean War Air Force Veteran and spent 2 years stationed on Guam as a cryptographer.
Harry's entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate the Citie's Service gas station in Hudson until moving to Arizona where he managed a 7-Eleven in Tucson, and several departments at Montgomery Wards. He was also involved with the Titan Missile Instillation at various sites including Complex 11 near Tucson. After returning to Ohio with his family, Harry started a trash hauling business that eventually grew into a full time service which he shared with his wife and son.
Harry retired from his business in 1991, and lived in the UP at Caribou Lake near Detour, MI for several years.
Harry was president of a snowmobile club and member of the Reading American Legion.
Harry has always enjoyed outdoor activities; hunting, fishing, baseball and softball. One of his personal highlights was participating in the Detroit Tigers Fantasy Camp in 1984 where he played with some of his favorite players from the 1968 World Series.
Harry is also survived by his 3 children; Bruce Phillips and Janice (Phillips) Batt, both of Bryan and Cynthia (Phillips) Higginbotham of Newark, OH; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Kenneth Phillips, Helen Penoyer, June Rice and Margaret Hughes.
At his request, cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial visitation Saturday, July 16, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Interment will immediately follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Reading.
