Herbert L. Black Obituary
Herbert L. Black, 88, of Pittsford, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 6, 1929 in Scott, Ohio to William Henry & Iva Mae (Fox) Black. Herb was married June 16, 1950 to Yvonne A. Francis and she survives.
Herb was a graduate of Pittsford High School in 1947. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a rural mail carrier from 1960 - 1989 in Pittsford and Hillsdale Post Offices. Herb was awarded the "Outstanding Rural Mail Carrier" for the State of Michigan in 1988. Herb enjoyed camping, hunting, traveling and spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and was excited about meeting his great-great-grandson coming in July of 2017.
Herb was very generous volunteering his spare time; some of the various interests he supported were being secretary of the F.A.B. reunion for 26 years, a 50+ years member of the Leighr A Wright Post #53 American Legion of Hillsdale. He was also a Boy Scout Leader in Pittsford and Hudson for 27 years, and was awarded with the "Silver Beaver Scout Award", in 1971. Herb was a 34 year member of the Pittsford-Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department and a Charter President and continuous member of the Pittsford Lions Club. Herb was also a member of the Pittsford Board of Education from 1965- 1973.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Yvonne; two sons, Nevarrow and Vandardis; grandchildren, Aaron, Vandardis II (Karen), Verlane (Jason), Dustin (Alycia), Ebony (Eric); great-grandchildren, Michael III (Kortney), Grayden (Rebecca), Thorne, Emma, Evan, Jakoby, Harrison, Tessa, and Kira; a great-great-grandson on the way, Michael Grant IV; siblings, Evelyn, Leonard, Emma, Francis and Lowell; former daughter-in-laws, Bonnie and Linda; sister-in-law, Wanda; and special friend Dee.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Lynda Lynett; siblings John, Lester and Laura; and daughter-in-law, Jannie.
Funeral services for Herb Black will be at 11 a.m. Monday, at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Dr. Samuel Wickard and Pastor Terry Bobzien officiating. Interment will follow at the Lickley's Corners Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Hillsdale.
