Jacqueline Jay (Gelzer) Morris Obituary
Jacqueline Jay Gelzer Morris died peacefully on January 11, 2016 in Hillsdale, Michigan.
Jacie was born August 20, 1928, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Warner Munger and Ola Marion Cochran Gelzer. She grew up in Hillsdale, where her family ran the H. J. Gelzer & Son hardware and furniture stores. She was a 1945 graduate of Hillsdale High School and received a degree in Political Science and English in 1949 from Michigan State University, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. In 1963, she earned a Master's Degree in Library Science from Wayne State University and began a long career as a school librarian and library administrator.
On December 31, 1949, she married Paul William Morris, to whom she was married for 58 years until his death in 2008. Jacie and Paul lived in Michigan, Kentucky, Texas, Ohio, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and Indiana before returning to Hillsdale in 1998.
Jacie worked as a school librarian in Forest Park, Georgia, Greensboro, North Carolina, and Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was a Library Consultant for the Wisconsin Department of Education and worked for many years with the Indiana Department of Education, where she was Director of the Office of Learning Resources. Among her many accomplishments was a term as President of the American Association of School Librarians and service on the Selection Committees for the Newbery and Caldecott Awards. She also taught at Indiana University and at Western Michigan.
After retiring in Indiana, she moved back to her hometown of Hillsdale to take the job she had dreamed of as a young girl, Librarian at the Mitchell Public Library. She was instrumental in planning and securing funding for the current Hillsdale Community Library, where, in her second retirement, she continued to work one day a week.
Locally, Jacie was a former member of Rotary and The American Association of University Women.
Jacie especially loved her family, her hometown, the cottage at Devil's Lake, her flower garden, and her cats.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents, Warner and Ola; her brothers and sisters, Warner Marion Gelzer, Ola Barbara Gelzer Baker, Antha Elinor Gelzer (Nicholas) Kerbawy, Janice Gelzer, George B. Gelzer (Esther, "Scotty"), and Jill Gelzer Berry.
