HILLSDALE - Sgt. James R. Martin, III age 30, of Cameron, North Carolina, passed away Friday, February 12, 2016 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina after a brief illness. James was born August 19, 1985 in Macomb, Illinois to Jim & Shirley (Gillette) Martin and they survive in Bushnell, Illinois. James married Hillsdale hometown girl, Janelle Cleveland on November 3, 2007 and she survives.

James served in the U.S. Army for 12 years, serving two tours. First in 2005-2006 deployed in Iraq, IOF II, serving as a artillery specialist and again in 2008-2009 in Enduring Freedom, as a Human Resource Specialist. James received his Sgt. rank in 2012. While serving James received the Army Commendation Medal, 3 the Joint Service Achievement Medal, 2 Army Achievement Medal, 3 Army Good Conduct Medal, 3 National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal w/bronze Service Medal, 2 Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal Global War of Terrorism Service Medal Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/M Device Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon Army Service Ribbon Overseas Service Ribbon, 2 Combat and Special Skill Badge Basic Marksmanship Qual Badge Bar, Expert Overseas Service Bar, 4. James loved spending time with his children and they were the center of his world. He was an avid woodworker making several different pieces for his family. He enjoyed working on cars, helping people and he loved to study history.

Surviving besides his wife, Janelle and parents Jim & Shirley are three children, Benjamin, Alivia and Brady Gunner; sisters, Nichole (Tony) Donaldson, Heidi (Blake) Grafton and Rachel (Nathan) Hyde; father & mother-in-law, Brian & Jill Cleveland of Hillsdale; sister-in-law, Erica Cleveland and brother-in-law, William Cleveland; grandparents, Marilyn Martin, Lola Gillette, Geraldine Harrington and William & Una Cleveland; six nieces and two nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, James Robert Martin and grandmother, Bertha Nichols.

Funeral services for Sgt. James R. Martin III will be Sunday, February 21, 2016, at 1 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Military Chaplain officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Hillsdale. The family will receive friends for visitation Sunday from 11 a.m. until services at 1 p.m., at the funeral home.
