She was born May 19, 1923 in Carrollton, Kentucky to William H. and Anna Lee Ewers, who later moved to Michigan. She also had a sister, Joanne, and brother Perry, both of whom preceded her in death.

Jane graduated from Benton Harbor High School, Class of 1940. She was a mid-year graduate (1943-44) of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and a member of the Alpha Beta Epsilon sorority. She taught elementary education for 8 years in Hastings, Fairplain, and Holland Michigan, respectively (1944-1952).

On December 28, 1947, she married Jordan D. "Judd" Marche, a veteran of the U.S. Navy who was then in the retail shoe business in St. Joseph. She shared 63 years of marriage with Judd before he passed away in 2011. He joined Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1949 and eventually rose to become a store manager in Lincoln, Illinois along with managing stores in Adrian, Muskegon, Kalamazoo, and Hillsdale, Michigan, where the couple finally settled in 1974.
