HILLSDALE - Jerold E. (Jerry) Rooks Sr., 87, of Hillsdale, died Saturday, December 19, 2015, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born in Holland, MI, May 20, 1928 to John & Jerena (Steggerda) Rooks, owners of Rooks Transfer Lines, Inc. and he lived in Holland most of his lif

After serving three years in the United States Coast Guard he returned to Holland and married Joanne Lowe, there they raised two children. In 1971 Jerry and his wife moved to Saugatuck, Mi., where he owned his own construction business. In 1989 they moved to Hillsdale, where he lived until he died. While growing up in Holland Jerry spent most of his time involved with horses and harness racing. He raced and won many races at county fairs. After moving to Saugatuck, golf became his favorite pastime. In Hillsdale he served the community on various committees including the building committee of the new Senior Center. He always looked forward to the Hillsdale County Fair and attended every race

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joanne and two children, Gail (Rod) Ziegel of Hillsdale and Jerold Jr. (Colette) Rooks of Douglas, MI; two grandsons, Pete and Kurt Ziegel, both of Chicago; and a sister, Ruth (Alan) Gross of Bloomington, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Sue (Tom) Bulson and Jackie (Jim) Letavis of Owosso, MI, Kay (Garth) Bullard of Hillsdale, Janice Brown of Florida and Ada & Betty Rooks, both of Holland.

Jerold was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Marjory, Paul and John

There will be a memorial visitation for Jerold Rooks on Sunday, December 27, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Private family interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI.
