John S. Sterling Obituary

JONESVILLE - John S. Sterling, 71, of Jerome, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family and his wife, Debra Bentz, whom he married May 6, 1994. He was born May 5, 1944 in Hillsdale to Harold "Doc" and Jean (Young) Sterling.

John graduated from Jonesville High School in 1962 and he received his Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University where he also played trumpet in the Spartan Marching Band. John retired from Branch County as a probation and parole officer. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fly fishing trips at his cabin on the Au Sable River in Grayling with his long-time friend, Gary Vitale. John also enjoyed music and playing the piano and guitar.

In addition to his wife, Debra and their daughter, Reagan Peavey, John is survived by two children, Lisha (Todd) Kilgus of Grosse Pointe Park and Scott Sterling of Sarasota, Florida; four step-children, Michelle Aldinger of Quincy, Bethany (Michael) McConnell of Novi, Tim (Abbey) Nichols of Commerce City, Colorado and Stephanie Nichols of Coldwater; ten grandchildren; three sisters, Ann Fusco of Vail, Colorado, Jane Friesema of Mercer Island, Washington and Jill (Ron) Longbrake of Elkhart, Indiana and a brother, Tom (Gail) Sterling of Troy.

John was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Jude and Paul.

Funeral services for John Sterling will be Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville with Pastor Lucas Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday from 6:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
