Lester Ivan Sarles Obituary
Lester Ivan Sarles (82) of Gilman, IL died January 4, 2018 at Gilman Healthcare Center following an extended illness. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Hillsdale, Michigan. There will be no visitation.
He was born October 3, 1935 in Reading, MI to Ivan Daniel and Lesta Irene (Good) Sarles.
Lester spent most of his life in Hillsdale, MI, before moving to Gilman in 2012.
He was married to Nellie Crow, with whom he had four children; Debbie, James, Jerry and Sheila. Lester was then married to Roma, with whom he had two children; Shawna and Kimberly. In 1989, he married Mary Louise (St Peter) Reitz in Hillsdale, MI. With whom he gained four step-children; Jim, Robert, Marianna and Michael Reitz.
Lester is survived by his children James, Jerry, Sheila, Shawna and Kimberly, as well as his stepson Michael Reitz, Step-Grandson, Brian (Tina) Reitz and Step-Granddaughter, Whitney (Jake) Huffman. Also surviving are his brother Richard Sarles, Sister Janet Booher, Sam, Ivan, Bert, Gregg, Beryl and Mary Ellen. Lester is also survived by several grand-children, nieces/ nephews and numerous step-neices/nephews.
Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise (Reitz) Sarles, Daughter Debbie, Stepchildren; James, Robert and Marianna Reitz, three siblings; Milton, Joann and Mary Ellen, as well as sisters in-law; Maureen St. Peter, Zita Sweeney, Dorothy Leidheiser, Marjorie Ann St Peter and brothers in-law: Maj Robert St Peter and Jerry St Peter.
As an Air Force Veteran he received a Purple Heart Award and he was an active member of the
Knights of Columbus for almost 30 years, having been a Grand Knight in Hillsdale. In his youth, he enjoyed farming with his cousins and in later years he enjoyed Bull Riding, Watch Making and playing cards. He was self employed for most of his career and then after retirement, he worked as a security guard at Hillsdale College.
