Marjorie Sue Sutton 1921-2015

HILLSDALE - Marjorie Sue Sutton of Hillsdale, Michigan passed away Friday, October 23, 2015 at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of Hillsdale County. She was born July 5, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio the daughter of Francis and Dolly (Smith) Hunt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Traver K. Sutton in 2007 and two sisters, Patricia Olds and Marion Massmann. She is survived by two sons, Mike (Linda) Sutton of Hillsdale and Brian (Jan) Sutton of Green Bay, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Traver J. (Amanda) Sutton of King George, Virginia, Molly (Ryan) Kiefer of Red Wing, Minnesota, James Sutton of Hillsdale and Chelsea (Cole) Stockton of Austin, Texas and 13 great-grandchildren.

Marjorie's family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1922 where she graduated from Western Hills High School and then entered Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1938. She met and later married her college sweetheart, Traver Sutton of Detroit, Michigan. After her graduation from Miami she taught elementary grades in Cincinnati, Dayton and Hamilton, Ohio over a period of twelve years. After completing her Ph.D. degree at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, she moved with her family to Hillsdale in 1965 where she and Traver were engaged as Professors at Hillsdale College. They both served the college for twenty-five years, retiring with emeritus standing in 1990.

Marjorie loved gardening and had raised prize winning dahlias. She was an avid traveler and with her husband, family members and friends had visited six of the seven continents of the earth. She was a longtime member of the Hillsdale Presbyterian Church and had served as both a deacon and an elder. She also was a member of Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women, the Hillsdale Woman's Club and of the Hughes Society of Miami University. She was also a charter member of the Lenawee Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.
