Merrill Rice Obituary

LITCHFIELD - Merrill Rice, 95, former long-time Litchfield area farmer, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2016, in Marshall. Born January 2, 1921, in Pulaski Township, he was the son of Donn E. and Mamie (Lovitt) Rice and a graduate of Concord High School. Merrill was the manager of the "Simpson Farm" in Litchfield for over 30 years and did custom farm work for others. He was a former member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association, Neighborhood Card Club and the Square Dancing Club. He enjoyed fishing, especially smelt fishing trips to Canada, and was a fan of horse pulling later in life.

On December 23, 1939, he married Kathryn Ochsenrider and she preceded him in death in 1999. Survivors include four daughters, Deanna (Addison) Brooks of Litchfield, Susie (Joe) Tiernan of Jackson, Lynn Guss of Jackson, and Nancy Watson of Jonesville; four sons, Lyle (Sandy) Rice of Litchfield, Larry (Judi) Rice of Litchfield, Ron (Lori) Rice of Allen, and Gary Rice of Homer; 41 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his best friend, Arlene Okley; sons-in law, Rick Guss and Toby Watson; two granddaughters, Kendra Tiernan and Shawn Marie Tiernan; three sisters, Donna Mae Rice, Phyllis Day, and infant Pauline Rice; and brother, Wilfred Rice.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday on March 29, 2016 at the Eagle Funeral Home, George White Chapel in Litchfield with Reverend Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Litchfield. Visitation is scheduled on Monday, March 28, 2016, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Homer United Methodist Church or the .
