Nancy Sue (Schmidt) Riggs 1940-2015

THERMOPOLIS — Nancy Sue (Schmidt) Riggs, 75, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2015 at her residence in Thermopolis.

Born January 31, 1940 in Hillsdale, Michigan, she was the daughter of Richard and Irene (Hukill) Schmidt. Following high school she attended colleges in Michigan earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in psychology and social work.

On July 25, 1962 she married Richard Lee Riggs in Bryan, Ohio. In addition to the role of wife and mother, she and Richard established Riggs Wildlife Rehabilitation Haven. For 20 years they rescued, rehabilitated and released a wide range of animals. Following her husband’s retirement the couple moved to Thermopolis, Wyoming in 1995.

An independent woman, she was outgoing and read people well. In addition to animal rescue, Nancy enjoyed western history, going to Yellowstone, and exploring the mountains with her husband.
Loved ones remaining are her husband of 53 years; son, Richard “Rick” (Joy) Riggs, Jonesville, MI; daughters, Kathy (Jeff) Dole, Eagle, MI and Amy (Charles) Frybarger, Mason, MI; sister, Lynell Kelley of AZ; grandchildren, Rachael and Michael Dole, Kayla and Skye Riggs, Travis and Joel Sutton, and Grace Frybarger; and nieces, Tammy Gessner and Jennifer Estel. She was preceded in death by her parents.

At her request, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers or donations, her wish was for everyone to hug, adopt, or rescue an animal.
