Raymond W. Oates Obituary

WALDRON - Raymond W. Oates, 82, of rural Waldron, died unexpectedly Tuesday night, August 16, 2016, at his home. He was born September 22, 1933, in Weston, Ohio, to the late Ralph and Sylvia (Sherrard) Oates. He married Dorothy Tedrow in 1955. He later married Katherine R. Balog on July 1, 1973, in Detroit, and she survives.

Raymond lived his early life in Weston, Ohio, where he graduated high school in 1952, and began what would be his 64-year career of farming. His experience in farming has included dairy cows, crop farming, showing cattle at various county fairs, dealing White and Cub Cadet equipment, and selling seed and farming supply for his family's business, Raymond Oates and Son.

Raymond was a dedicated member of the National Hay Association (NHA) since 1973, only missing one convention in 1981, because of injuries he sustained in a serious tractor accident. The NHA convention was his only "vacation" each year. He served on its board of directors for ten years, and as 2nd Vice President from 1992-93, and later President from 1994-95. He was instrumental in founding the "Haymaker of the Year Award", and later was deemed the title himself in 2005.

Remembered by his family as a great story teller, Raymond always went the extra mile for his customers, and many could describe him as dedicated, creative, and aggressive in his career. He enjoyed collecting farm tractors, farming books, traveling, and most notably, his time spent with his cherished family and grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 43 years, Katherine, are his son, Ronald (Dianna) Oates of Hudson; five daughters, Betty (David) Markel of Bangor, MI, Barbara (David) Miller of Horton, MI, Bonnie (Tom) Pilaczynski of Quincy, MI, Beth Ann (Gregory) Shibley of North Palm Beach, FL, and Brenda (Karl) Zachmann of Indianapolis, IN; two sisters, Marie (Bill) Cline of Fostoria, OH and Helen (Rex) Nietz of Wayne, OH; eighteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; the mother of his children, Dorothy (Tedrow) Snyder of Jonesville, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service for Raymond will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at Noon, at the Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson with son-in-law Rev. David Markel officiating. Dinner will immediately follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson, concluded by a family burial at Waldron Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday afternoon, from 3-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorial donations in honor of Raymond to Waldron FFA, , Waldron District Library, or the Hillsdale County Fair for a 4H Scholarship. Friends can share memories and words of comfort with the family online at www.eaglefuneralhomes.com.
