Richard E. Monroe Obituary
Richard E. Monroe, 93, of Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at his home. He was born September 15, 1924 in Adams Township, the son of William and Stella (Sawyer) Monroe. Richard married Alice Bates and she preceded him in death. On August 7, 1994 he married Sally Crawford, and she survives.
Richard attended North Adams Schools and later graduated from Coyne Electrical College in Chicago and became a master electrician employed by Ok Electric, Quality Electric and Hillsdale BPU. Richard was an avid reader who loved the outdoors, especially cutting wood and gardening. He also enjoyed traveling to Vermont and other areas of the United States. Richard was a member of Hillsdale Free Methodist Church. He served his country in the US Army in WWII.
Surviving besides his wife, Sally, are three children, Mary Green of Hillsdale, Ray Monroe and Don (Pamela) Monroe, both of Reading; step-daughters, Carol (Tony) Nuyen of Galesburg and Pamila Wilkins of Plantation,FL; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one step-grandson and four step-great-grandchildren; and sister, Helen Ott of Coshocton, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Alice; son, Tim; and a brother, Edward Monroe.
Funeral services for Richard Monroe will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Hillsdale Free Methodist Church with Pastor Keith Porter officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Private family interment will take place at Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hillsdale Free Methodist Church Kitchen or Library Fund, Gideon's Bible, Hospice of Hillsdale County or Crossroad Farms #77.
