Walter W. Schray Obituary

HILLSDALE - Walter W. Schray, 88, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, January 11, 2016 at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility where he received loving care for many years. He was born March 19, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Walter and Elizabeth Schray, a part of a large, loving Schray family in Allentown, Pennsylvania who gathered yearly for reunions. He joined the Navy in 1945, luckily bunking next to Gil Schaerer, his future partner in starting Jonesville Paper Tube. He was stationed on Treasure Island serving as a pharmacist mate. Thanks to the G.I. Bill, he was able to attend college at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, majoring in history. Following graduation, he took a business training course under G.E. and worked there from 1951-1955. His Navy buddy, Gil Schaerer wrote asking if he'd like to start a new company based on his father's tube company in Detroit. After many difficult years, JPTC became established and steadily grew, now under the direction of Gil's sons, Rick and Steve.

Walt married Susan Robertson in 1962 who survives as does daughter, Julia and son, Robert both of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He served as an Elder at Jonesville First Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale. He was a member of the Jonesville Rotary Club, honored as a Paul Harris fellow. As a Rotarian, he traveled to international conventions and stayed with Rotarian families around the world. He served as member of boards of Hillsdale Industrial Development Commission, Kimball Camp Y.M.C.A., The Salvation Army, Beth Moser Mental Health Clinic and The Manor Foundation.

He enjoyed many years acting in the Sauk Theater productions and editing a small newspaper, The Squeak, with Russ Holcomb and Gil Schaerer which allowed him access to interview interesting people, many of whom were visitors from other countries.

Memorial services for Walt Schray will be Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Hillsdale First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Patti Beckman officiating. Private family interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale. The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, June 17, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hillsdale County Community Foundation or the Jonesville Rotary Scholarship Fund. Please visit www.eaglefuneralhomes.com to leave online condolences.
