LOGAN - Rulon J. Gerber, 89, passed away at his home Aug. 10, 2010. Rulon was born Jan. 11, 1921, to John and Julia Keller Gerber. He attended Millville Elementary School, transported to and from school each day by a horse-drawn covered wagon from Blacksmith Fork Canyon. He graduated from South Cache High School in Hyrum in 1939.
He started the Nibley Grocery in 1940 and operated it until World War II. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving until the war ended in 1945. In 1947 they started Gerber's Grocery. In 1950 they built and operated a new and more modern Gerber's A.G. Market.
He met and married Betty Lou Haltiner in the Logan LDS Temple in 1946. They celebrated their 63rd anniversary on Nov. 22. Their lives blended as one as they worked together in their church callings, their occupation, civic organizations and homes. He enjoyed fishing, sports events, travel, gardening, his family, and his many friends.
Among his many church callings, he was ordained a high priest by Ezra Taft Benson, served in the 19th Ward bishopric and later served as a stake high councilor in the Logan East Stake. In 1989, Rulon and Betty served a mission in Nauvoo. He sang in the Men's Imperial Glee Club for more than 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, daughters Nyla Jean (David) Adamson, Salt Lake City; Connie (Todd) Taylor, Logan; sons Gaylan (Debbie) Gerber, Logan; Nolan Dee (Beverly) Gerber, Salt Lake City; Troy (Charisse) Gerber, Lehi. Dear Family:
Rulon has set high standards as a great and caring man, husband, father. Recently he has suffered ill health and endured that as magnificently as he enjoyed perfect health. It has been my pleasure to know him and his family. May peace abound following this loss.

Dear Mrs. Gerber,
I am very sorry to hear of Rulon's passing, the times that I have had the pleasure of spending with your family is one of fond memories. He is a good man whose footsteps will be hard to follow. I know how you feel at this point in time of your life for I have been there myself. Even in my darkest hour, Mr Gerber was still able to put a smile on my face...that being one of his many special gifts.
You have a wonderful family to support you through this time, especially with Connie. She was such a big help for when my wife Jody passed that words cannot express the gratitude in my heart. Though you and Mr. Gerber had spent many more years together than Jody and I did, the hurt is still the same. Be strong, take one day at a time and accept those whom are willing to help. My love and prayers go out to you and your wonderful family. May the good Lord rain his blessings down upon you at this your time of need.

Sincerely yours,
Mike Taylor

Rulon was one of my favorite teachers and priesthood leaders as a young boy in the old Tenth Ward. And it was a great day when they opened up the "Gerb's Place" store, as we used to call it,in our neighborhood. He was always kind and helpful to my mother, Edna Hugie, and our family appreciated his good influence on her. Love, respect and best wished to Betty and all of Rulon's family.
