Cody Russell Nielson, 17, grandson of Gail and Janice Buttars of Logan, passed away Oct. 20, 2012, in Winnemucca, Nev., after a two and a half year battle with desmoplastic small round cell tumor. This type of cancer is a very aggressive grower affecting the abdominal area of its victims, which are mostly young males.

Cody was a very courageous young man during all the trials and the horrific pain he endured the last few weeks of his life. Cody received treatment for this cancer in Oakland, Calif., Houston, Texas, Primary Children's Hospital and The Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City.
Cody was born Aug. 23, 1995, in Winnemucca, Nev., the son of Russell Winston Nielson and Janae Buttars. He attended schools in Winnemucca. Cody excelled in basketball and bowling. He also loved to play electronic games with his friends in Winnemucca and his cousin Bryton Finlinson when he was in Logan.
Cody is survived by his parents Russ and Janae Nielson of Winnemucca; two sisters, Cheryl Stout (Jonathan) and their two children Andrew and Ashley of La Mesa, Calif., and Stacy Standaert (Lawrence) and their three children Mariah, Hayley and Autumn of Elko, Nev.; grandparents Winston Nielson of Oregon and Gail and Janice Buttars of Logan. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Mary Nielson of Oak City, Utah.
Funeral services and burial will take place Saturday in Winnemucca.
