Marcus Cockerham Obituary

LOGAN - Marcus Avery Cockerham passed away Oct. 9, 2011, at his home in Logan, Utah, at the age of 28. He was born June 3, 1983, in Alexandria, Va., to Nola Johnson and Gary Cockerham. At a young age he moved with his parents to Rio Rancho, N.M., where he earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award. He later moved to Thatcher, Utah, in 1994 where he obtained his Eagle Scout Award.
He attended Bear River High School in Garland, Utah, where he enjoyed being a theater techie and a member of various choirs. He received the BRHS Sterling Scholar Award for Drama in 2001. His love of, and capacity for, learning enabled him to earn multiple scholarships to USU where he graduated magna cum laude in 2010 with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering. He also minored in math and computer science. At USU he continued expressing his love for music by participating in several choirs, including University Chorale, LDS Institute Choir and the American Festival Chorus. He furthered his education by serving honorably in the Nebraska Omaha Mission from 2004 to 2006. In 2009, he earned his amateur radio license with the FCC so that he could help in an emergency. He worked as a civilian engineer for the U.S. Air Force at Hill Air Force Base until this semester when he started working on his master's in electrical engineering at USU funded by the Air Force's Palace Acquire program.
Marcus married his loving eternal companion and best friend, Pierco Ann Pitcher, of Cornish, Utah, in the Logan LDS Temple on Dec. 22, 2007. They were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Lucinda Ray Cockerham, who was born July 23, 2010. He adored his little girl and loved to introduce her to the world and how it works.
His grandmothers, Mattie Ray Cockerham and Alice Cheney Johnson, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and daughter; parents of West Valley City; sister, Alice (Richard) Lemon of Brigham City; sister, Kate Cockerham of West Valley City; grandparents, Carlton and Dessie Cockerham of Covington, Va.; grandfather, Norman Johnson of Dayton, Idaho; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his very special in-laws, Ralph and Dawn Pitcher of Cornish, Adam (Dayna) Pitcher of Ames, Iowa, Lance (Kate) Pitcher of Logan, Tyler (Lacey) Pitcher of Smithfield, and Sara Pitcher of Cornish.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Oct. 14, at the Logan 16th Ward chapel, 600 N. 125 West, Logan, Utah, with a viewing from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Cornish Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary.
We'll miss your quick wit and how you kept us on our toes in every game or contest ever attempted. Your ability to teach is heaven-blessed and we are all the better for having known you. We love you! Be good and stuff. :*

Our hearts are filled with such sorrow for you dear Pierco, sweet little Lucy, for all the family and ourselves. My son says "We won't be able to play games with him any more or build Lego." My daughter says "I miss his sweet face and happy smile. I won't be able to listen to him play piano anymore through the window." Who will be there to laugh at our uncommon baked treats? We forget the importance of such little things, until we don't have them any more! And when my little one asks "Is Mr. Marcus home?" we'll have only to say "Not here, he went home to be with God." He is greatly missed and you are greatly loved! The Clayton Family

Marcus was assigned as my mentor when I first attended USU. After he returned from his mission and decided to take some more Electrical Engineering, he was in a class that I taught. I have warm memories of chaperoning for Engineering State with Marcus and Jeff Anderson. My deepest condolences to the family, and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
