John Andrew Mayers Jr. Obituary

WELLSVILLE, Utah — Our loving husband, father, grandfather and papa returned home to his Heavenly Father in the early morning hours on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007. He fought a valiant fight with liver disease and cancer. He was born Jan. 14, 1945, in Hayward, Calif., to John Andrew Mayers Sr. and Ruth Evelyn Clegg. He grew up in Grants Pass, Ore., where he met his best friend and sweetheart Sharon Mae Moomaw. They were married Nov. 12, 1963, in Grants Pass, Ore. Their marriage was later solemnized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Oakland Temple on Jan. 21, 1967. John and Sharon moved to Wellsville, Utah, in April of 1972 where they raised six wonderful sons. John believed that Utah would be the best place to raise his family. He was a strong and humble member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a deep testimony. He was a High Priest in the Wellsville 2nd Ward. He served in many callings in the church. He was a primary teacher, scout leader, member of the Elders Quorum presidency, and served in numerous bishoprics as an executive secretary. He was a faithful home teacher. When he lived in Oregon his home teaching would take him 100 miles round trip but he never missed a month. Dad especially loved Christmas and New Years when the entire family came together to celebrate. He had many friends but would rather do things with his family. John loved spending time with his wife, sons and grandchildren and supported them always in their many endeavors. He loved working in his yard, and gardening. He loved working with his hands. He was proud of his home. He loved hunting, camping, spending time outdoors and riding his 4-wheeler. He loved to go on family vacations back to Oregon where he visited with family and friends. He enjoyed going to movies, listening to music, watching sports and working on his cars. His family and the church were always Dad’s priorities. In 2007 he retired from USU after working there for 30 years. He worked hard his whole life to support his family. He is preceded in death by his mom and dad; and his sister-in-law, Linda Mayers. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Mayers of Wellsville, Utah; and his six sons, Mike (Loree) Mayers of Hyrum, Daryn Mayers of Wellsville, Joe (Traci) Mayers of Logan, Lance Mayers of Wellsville, John B. (Jenny) Mayers of Smithfield and Jack (Pamela) Mayers of Logan; 11 grandchildren, Michael, Brandon, Ashlee, Jaden, Adam, Amber, Christopher, Rachel, Hannah, Sarah and little Jackson; and two brothers, Gerry (Marion) Mayers and Jim (Linda, deceased) Mayers. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, at the Wellsville Stake Center on the corner of Center and Main. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Allen-Hall Mortuary and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery. Dad, you are a great man and will be missed until we meet again. We love you. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net.
