Clayton "Clayt" Ter Haar

Clayton "Clayt" Ter Haar, age 84, of Holland, died Thursday May 15, 2014, at Holland Hospital.

Born and raised in Holland, he was a graduate of Holland High School, and in 1950 he married Ruth Mendels. Clayt came from a long line of family members involved in the automobile business and he was partner and general manger of Vandenberg Motors Inc. for 40 years. During his lifetime, Clayt belonged to National Guard Company D of Holland, was an active member of Christ Memorial Church where he served on consistory, was a former Holland City Council member, past president of the Holland Rotary club, and a member of Hope College's Academy of Senior Professionals (HASP) . He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 2011; sons, Kim Ter Haar in 1971, and David Ter Haar in 2013; and sister, Genevieve Vander Beek.

Surviving are his son, Richard Ter Haar and friend, Gina Nelson of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Katherine, Rebecca and Lesile Ter Haar; and great-grandson, Brayden Alexander Brawner. Also surviving are a brother, Erwin and Sandy Ter Haar of Holland; daughter-in-law, Holly Ter Haar of Hilton Head Island, SC; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Mulder Chapel, Dykstra Funeral Homes Inc., 188 West 32nd Street. Officiating will be Rev. Ron Beyer. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, 5-8 p.m. at the Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to HASP, C/O Hope College, and Special Olympics of Michigan.
