James D. Hays, M.D., 81, of Holland, died December 2, 2013, in his home. He was born on September 15, 1932, in Altamont, Kansas to Ardin E. Hays and Zula Baldridge Hays. As a young boy, he and his parents moved to Indianapolis, and eventually settled in Kent, Ohio. He attended high school there and was valedictorian of his class. He furthered his education by following a pre-med program at Kent State University graduating with cum laude honors, and went on to medical school at Ohio State University. His internship was fulfilled at Philadelphia General Hospital, and residency at McLaren General Hospital in Flint. He found Michigan appealing and as a new doctor, began his practice in Douglas as a General Practitioner. Many years later, he completed a fellowship program at the University of Michigan to become a Doctor of Anesthesiology. Due to the onset of health problems, he retired from practice in 1993.
On September 29, 1995, Dr. Hays married Jeanne S. Boss and they made their home together in Holland. James was preceded in death by his son, David Hays.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Hays; children, Jean Marie Hays of Royal Oak, Lara Javalyn and Tyson Merriam of Tara, Ontario, Canada, Jeffrey and Stacey Cummings of Westbrook, Maine, James Cummings of Holland, and Cathy and Cal Schepel of Holland. Also surviving are grandchildren, Aaron Sirota, Thomas Merriam, Zack Schepel, Chris Schepel, Lance and Beth Cummings, Sarah and Jason Agar, Maggie Cummings; and great-grandchildren, Caleb and Carleigh Agar; sister-in-law, Anny Skiles of Holland; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private graveside services will be held. Visitation will be Thursday, 4-7 p.m. at the Northwood Chapel, Dykstra Funeral Homes Inc., 295 Douglas Ave. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland. For more information please visit www.dykstrafuneralhome.com.

Regrettably I was saddened by the news of his passing away. His body of work will inspire many of our generation to fully grasp the great divide between earth and heaven. Best wishes
