Obituary Condolences

Robert C. Froelich Sr. Obituary
Robert C. Froelich, Sr., age 88, of Holland, went to meet his maker on August 20, 2014.

Robert was born on September 21, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Edmund Froelich and Henrietta Simmelink Froelich. Robert was predeceased by his parents and his brother George.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ellen Ann "Nan" Beuker Froelich; his three children and their spouses, Robert (Judy) Froelich (Frankfort), Sue (Matt) Mehl (Overland Park, KS) and Heidi (John) Slinkman (Aurora, IL); his four grandchildren, Tobin, Tyler, Erin (Chris), and Molly; as well as extended family and friends.

A graduate of Hope College in Holland, (where he met Nan), Robert began his career as an educator, teaching high school English and Math. From 1952-1969, Robert was employed by General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Toledo Museum of Art, Schoolcraft Community College and Oakland Community College. Robert is best remembered for his 20 years at Central University of Iowa (now Central College). During this time, his fiscal leadership with President Ken Weller was so sound it is often referred to as Central's "Golden Era."

Robert was a lifelong volunteer in his communities, including Boy Scouts of America, Red Cross and the YMCA. He was one of the founding members of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Beulah. He is remembered for his great generosity, particularly in support of education.

A memorial service, with Rev. Linda Knieriemen officiating, will be in the 6th Floor Auditorium at Freedom Village, 145 Columbia Avenue, Holland, on Saturday September 6, at 11 a.m. Arrangements for Robert's cremation and the Freedom Village memorial service are being made by Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home of Holland, where an on-line memory book is available on their website

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Holland in memory of Robert Froelich. Donations can be made via the Hospice of Holland website, via donation envelopes available at the memorial service or by phone at 616-396-2972.
