William DeVries Obituary
William "Bill" DeVries, 90, of Holland, died peacefully Wednesday, December 11, 2013, with his wife and family, granddogs included, by his side. Bill was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Life Scout and graduated from Holland High School in 1942. He was a Corporal in the 3704th U.S. Army Air Force Base Unit during World War II, serving as an airplane armorer. He returned home Valentine's Day, 1946, and married his high school sweetheart, Jean Wennersten. Bill apprenticed as a carpenter with Elzinga and Volkers before working as a construction foreman for Martin Dyke and Sons, and other area construction firms. He retired as the maintenance carpenter for West Ottawa Public Schools. Bill was devoted to his wife of 67 years, Jean, and doted on his daughters, grandchildren and granddogs. Christmas, when his children and their families, two- and four-footed, descended on the house in a flurry of small feet, wagging tails, wrapping paper and ribbon, was his favorite day of the year.

He is survived by his wife, Jean W. DeVries; his daughters and their families, Suzanne DeVries-Zimmerman and Lynn Zimmerman, and grandson William; Christine and Kurt Hornby and granddaughters, Victoria and Maria.

A memorial service celebrating Bill's life will be at noon Saturday, December 21, at First United Methodist Church, 57 W. 10th St., Holland. Visitation will be at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland or First United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
