Simon "Sy" Sybesma Obituary
Simon "Sy" Sybesma, age 93, of Holland, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Oak Crest Manor in Holland. Sy was born February 16, 1921, to Abe and Mary (Boss) Sybesma.

Born and raised in Holland, Sy was a resident of the area his entire life. He graduated from Holland High School in 1939. Sy, a veteran of the U.S. Army, served in North Africa and Italy during World War II. In 1943, he married Gertrude Nevenzel. He was employed with Hart & Cooley Manufacturing, retiring after 39 years. He also worked for Prince Corporation. After retirement he worked part-time for over 20 years at Model Drug Store in Holland, finally retiring at age 90. Sy was a member of Christ Memorial Church for many years. He also served for several years on the boards of Holland Hospital and Park Township. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laurine Breuker; and brother, Rev. Russell Sybesma.

Surviving Sy are his wife of 70 years, Gertrude Sybesma of Holland; daughter, Carol (Tom) Morton of Alexandria, VA; two sons, Bill (Lorelle) Sybesma of Grand Haven, and Brian (Diane) Sybesma of Holland; grandchildren, Tom Morton Jr., Jonathan Morton, Courtney (Derek) Stultz, Michelle (Richard) Carpenter, Andrea Sybesma, Samantha Sparks and Melanie Sparks. Also surviving Sy are his sister, Adeline Sybesma of Holland; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Sybesma of Holland, Ruth Neely of Fernandina Beach, FL; and brother-in-law, Robert (Barbara) Nevenzel of Holland; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Road. Officiating will be Rev. Bill Boersma. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service in the chapel. Burial will be in Graafschap Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Geneva or Spectrum Health Hospice.
