Martha (Venema) Vanderzalm

1923 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Martha (Venema) Vanderzalm Obituary
Martha (Venema) Vanderzalm, age 90, of Holland, entered the presence of the Lord she loved on May 26, 2014.

Martha was born in Schiedam, the Netherlands, on Christmas Day in 1923. In 1946, she married Bastian Vanderzalm in Haarlem, the Netherlands. In 1953, she and her husband and their two young sons immigrated to Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. In 1958, they immigrated to the U.S. and lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, for 30 years.

After Bas' retirement in 1987, Martha and her husband sold their home in Salt Lake City and bought a motor home. For 10 years they loved and cared for people in many places around the U.S. They visited family, fixing things that needed fixing, enjoying their children and grandchildren. They also served in disaster areas as volunteers with the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (now called World Renew) and as volunteers with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Tucson, Arizona.

In 1999, health issues led Bas and Martha to "retire" from their active volunteer work and settle in Holland, where they were members of Pine Creek Christian Reformed Church and later, Harderwyk Christian Reformed Church.

Martha's husband, Bas, died in February, 2012. She is survived by her sons, Bas (Lynn) and Allen (Tammy); her grandchildren, Becky (Leonard) Allen, Matt (Pam) Vanderzalm, Brian (Amber) Vanderzalm, Alisa (Joe) Vanderzalm-Hyland, Scott (Jessie) Veneklase, Kate (Jack) Fagan; her great-grandchildren, Jonathan Allen, Lindsey Vanderzalm, Madeline Fagan, Sean Fagan and Lucas Vanderzalm; her sister, Nicky Hofman; and sister-in-law, Hermina Zwaal (Teun). She is predeceased by her sisters, Nell, Annie, Johanna; and her brother, Jim.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, at Dykstra Funeral Home, Northwood Chapel, 295 Douglas Ave. in Holland. Reverend Henry Admiraal will be officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in honor of Martha's life and service be sent to World Renew, 1700 28th St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508. To sign an on-line registry or leave a memory please visit www.dykstrafuneralhome.com.
