March 31, 1923 - December 2, 2012
Frank Edward Hamilton of Hot Springs passed away Sunday, December 2, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs. He was 89 years old.
He was born March 31, 1923, to Louis Hamilton and Clara Beckett.
Frank joined the U.S. Navy on March 19, 1942, when he was 18 years old. He served nearly six years, being discharged in January 1948. At the time of his discharge, he was a Chief Pharmacist's Mate or Chief Petty Officer.
While in the Navy, Frank attended Hospital Corpsman School at Balboa Park, San Diego, Calif.
After graduating Frank was shipped out on the Dutch Freighter, HMS Sommelsdike with a shipment of hydro glycerin and TNT destined for Neumia, New Caledonia.
His group was assigned to duty on Guadalcanal where he served as a hospital corpsman for the Marines. Frank was eventually carried off Guadalcanal in a wire basket and taken to Auckland, New Zealand where he was cared for by the Gray Ladies. Frank believed that he was very fortunate to have survived Guadalcanal.
After his recovery, he was sent to the U.S Navy Hospital in Farragut, Idaho for further treatment. From Idaho he was sent to the USS Seattle in New York, where he taught Anatomy, Biology, Physiology and Pharmacy to other Navy personnel. He also taught naval courtesies and new incoming officers how to tell military time.
Frank also served on Guam, where it was his duty to care for the Marines at the Marine Dispensary and also care for the Japanese prisoners being held there who might be sick or injured.
Frank was active in his community. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, VFW and American Legion. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Louise of Hot Springs, three daughters; Frances (Ed) Murray of Casper, Wyo., Mary Beth (Ken) Haas of Chetek, Wis., Lynn McNutt of Post Falls, Idaho, two step-daughters; Kathy (Keith) Lengkeek and Cindy (David) Westphal of Rapid City; his step-son, James (Linda) Hitt of Congress, Ariz., a brother, Sonny Beckett of Ft. Collins, Colo., and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his son, Frank Jr., his parents, a brother, Troy Beckett and sisters, Lois Beckett and Joyce Kershner and his step-father, Warren Beckett
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 13, 2012 at United Churches with Pastor Clint Walker officiating. Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
