James G. McWhorter, 92, a native of Oxford, Ala., and resident of Raceland died on Friday November 30, 2012.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Samart-Mothe Funeral Home in Matthews, and from 9 a.m. to funeral time Tuesday at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church. Military Funeral Honors will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday by the United Veterans League. Mass will be at 12 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with burial in Holy Savior Catholic Cemetery.
He is survived by his sons, Chuck McWhorter and wife, Monica, Donald McWhorter, Jim McWhorter and wife, Carol Sue, Mike McWhorter and wife, Kathleen, Tom McWhorter and wife, Mary; his daughter, Susan McWhorter Matherne and husband, Jamie; brother, Horace "Edsel" McWhorter; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Levert McWhorter; his parents, Billy O. McWhorter and Vera Bell Murray; one son, Russell Paul "Rusty" McWhorter; one daughter, Mary Ann McWhorter; brothers, Owen McWhorter, Woodrow McWhorter and Fillmore McWhorter; and his sisters, Maxine Shields, Elsie Bowen Estes and Ethel Owens.
He was a parishioner of St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church.
He retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service as a Corpsman. He served during WWII and the Koran Conflict.
Samart-Mothe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
