Donald Newman Smith, 80, of Houma passed away at his home Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014.
A private service will be held in Carl Junction, Mo.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Smith of Houma. A daughter Idonna Lawrence and husband Jeff, of Springfield, Mo.; three sons, Ronald Scott Smith and wife Tracy, of Joplin, Mo., Bradley Frank Smith of Joplin, Mo., and Michael Van-J Smith of Mobile, Ala.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rhonda Sue Smith.
He was born in Beauregard Miss., to the late Van Johnson Smith and Elma Smith. Don served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict earning four medals. After his discharge, he graduated from Phoenix College of Mortuary Science and eventually owned a funeral home in Mt. Vernon, Mo. He later served as a peace officer in Phoenix, Ariz., managed Beatrice Foods Dairy in St. Joseph, Mo., and eventually settled in Houma where he was employed by Cavin's Corporation before retiring.
He was a member of the Moila Shrine Temple and a 32nd degree Mason.
In retirement, he enjoyed golfing and fishing with his sons. He lived his life with integrity and always provided for his family. He is loved by family and friends and will be sadly missed.
