James "Jim" Gervais Cooley, 88, a native of DeRidder and resident of Thibodaux, passed away at 4 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2014 at The Carpenter House in Baton Rouge.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until funeral time Friday at First Baptist Church at 1021 Canal Blvd. in Thibodaux. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be at noon Friday at the church, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux.
He is survived by his son, Kerry L. Cooley; brother, John Wayne Cooley; nephews, Kenneth Glen Cooley and wife, Carol McConathy Cooley, and Klayton Duane Cooley; niece, Kelsey Nicole Cooley; step-granddaughter, Lyndsay McDonough; and step-grandson, Clayton McDonough.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Elaine Leach Cooley; and parents, James Patterson Cooley and Camilla Gunter Cooley,
James was a U.S. Navy veteran, a long-time manager of West Brothers Department Store in Thibodaux, and a founding member of Acadian Bank, present day Regions Bank. He was a member and past president of Thibodaux Rotary Club, member and past president of Thibodaux High School Tiger Club, member and past President of Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce, and Deacon Emeritus of First Baptist Church in Thibodaux.
