Joseph Laurent Roy, 85, passed away in Houston, Texas, Friday June 13, 2014. He was a longtime Houma resident who had recently moved to Houston to be near his children.
At Joe's request, no funeral service will be held. The family is honoring his practicality and desire to be thrown out in the backyard by returning him to his hometown of Rumford, Maine. They ask that you remember his humor, his ability to spin a yarn from a grain of truth, and his big heart.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; children, Roxanne King (Roy), Rochelle Leonard (Toby), and Scott Roy; grandchildren, Joseph King, Kara King, Kacie King, James Leonard, Laura Leonard, John Leonard, and Amanda Leonard; brothers, Real and Arthur Roy; and countless nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Louise; father, Omer; and oldest brother, Norman.
Joe was born in Rumford, Maine, the second-oldest of four sons born to Omer and Marie Louise Roy. His early life was filled with sports, studies, and mischief-making with his brothers. After graduating from high school, Joe joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950.
After serving four years, including a tour in Korea and a posting in Texas, Joe met his wife Martha (née Marsh). The two were married in 1953 and relocated to Houma, where they had three children, Roxanne, Rochelle and Joseph Prescott.
While in Houma, Joe worked for South Central Bell for more than 20 years. After retirement, he refused to leave his tinkering ways behind, and continued providing handyman services well into his seventies. Joe could frequently be found driving through town in his pickup truck, grabbing coffee with friends, or enjoying a beverage on his porch, always willing to stop by for an odd job or cold beer.
