Oliver Matherne

Oliver Joseph Matherne, 75, a native and resident of Houma, died at 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2012.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to funeral time Tuesday at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with burial in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Anne Sharpe Matherne of Houma; two sons, Christopher James Matherne of Houma and Samuel Joseph Matherne and wife, Terri, both of Houma; daughter, Celeste Marie Matherne Bauland and husband, Hal of Houma; four grandchildren, Matthew Matherne, Cori Anna Matherne, Madeleine Bauland and Meredith Bauland; brother, John Matherne; and two sisters, Emma "Lynn" Chafin and Rosalie Matherne Pace.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Warner J. Matherne and Mineola Hebert Matherne; and two sisters, Anna Mae Nelton and Alea Dupre.

He was a parishioner of St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church.

He was a district fire chief for 20 years. After retiring from the fire department he went on to work and retire from Hughes Drilling Fluids as a safety director. He served in the U.S. Navy during peacetime and was a member of the U.S.S. Richard B. Anderson Alumni Association.

Chauvin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
