Fernando Segura Obituary

Fernando H. Segura, 96, died peacefully at his Houston home on April 10, 2013, with his loving wife Annette and beloved niece Maria Segura de Padilla at his side. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1916, Fernando was the seventh of eight sons born to Dr. Eliseo Segura and Josefina Ayerza de Segura.
Always a man of adventure, Fernando chose to serve in the Argentine Cavalry for his military conscription, choosing to serve rather than call on his father's influence to be exempt from service. He was an exceptional athlete who enjoyed playing tennis, water and snow skiing, polo, and earned a 4th degree black-belt in Judo. He also raced Porsches in Sebring and the Panamerican Road Race, placing 2nd in his class in 1953. After placing 1st in his class in the 1954 Panamerican Road Race, Fernando sold his Porsche to the young actor, James Dean. An avid golfer with a 5 handicap, he was known for his smooth and elegant swing.
He married his first wife, Josephine Abercrombie of Houston in 1950, who he met while skiing in Chile. After their divorce, Fernando made Houston his permanent home. He earned his Architectural degree at the Universidad de Buenos Aires in 1944. In 1978, under the sponsorship of Kenneth Franzheim, he became a member of the AIA and began a long career in residential development in Houston.
In 1990 he married Annette Lusk of Houston with whom he shared many happy years. Whether skiing in Aspen, training tigers, elephants and bears at Gentle Jungle in Laguna Hills, or taking the trawler "China Doll" to explore Spanish galleons, they lived every precious moment together. Fernando loved life, loved people and loved to laugh. As a niece once put it, " You can get lost in that smile."
His family would like to express their deep appreciation to their dear housekeeper Sofia Erazo for her 28 years of loyal devotion.
He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews in Argentina, including his niece and goddaughter, Maria Segura de Padilla and her husband Eduardo Padilla, their nine children; Eduardo, Ignacio, Tobias, Maria, Anita, Esteban, Isabel, Jose and Javier. He was so honored to receive the love and kindness of Maria, Ignacio, Anita and Esteban's many visits over the years. He also leaves behind his American family, including his mother-in-law, Ursula Guseman Lusk; his father-in-law Charles M. "Buzz" Lusk, Jr.; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-laws Miki and Ralph Norton, Charlene and Bill Dwyer, Charles and Kathy Lusk, Jim and Catherine Lusk, Patrick Lusk (deceased), his American nephews and nieces; Michael Norton, Whitt Dwyer, Alexander (Elizabeth) Dwyer, Emily Dwyer, Andy (Caroline) Lusk, Lauren (Robbie) Willis, Bryan (Stephanie) Lusk, Stephanie Lusk and Jeffrey (Lauren) Lusk, all who embraced Fernando warmly, admired him kindly and loved him dearly.
A memorial service honoring Fernando Segura will be held on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 4:00 P.M. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd. Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association at alz.org. or to the charity of your choice.

A true and fun gentleman if there ever was one!

Just heard of your passing. Wow. What a long life. What an adventure. Like so many of the women of Houston now of "a certain age", will always laugh remembering the parties at DelMonte and the yellow porche and Jag, and Miles and Champions, and the always precocious glint in those perpetually youthful eyes! You were one of a kind.

Annette,
We were so saddened to learn of Fernando's passing. Although we only knew him for a short time...it was a wonderful experience.

Though I have not seen you in over 50 years, I still remember how kind, attentive, and generous you were when a scrawny 12 year old oohed and ahhed about your XKE when you attended a party at my parents? You actually let me drive it around the block (not by myself, of course). Your kindness and generosity made a lifelong impression on me. Rest in peace, and my sincere and heartfelt condolences to your grieving family.

Fernando,

It was a real gift to know you so early in my life. From my little kid eyes you always seemed like you were made with a pinch of magic. You were an inspiration in my love of languages of other cultures and I was always so amazed how you could fit so many languages in your head. Passe un bon voyage et ???????Stay magical.

Ferrrrrrnannnnndo -
The name forever rolls off the tongue, and sometimes took 5 minutes to finish. An aristocratic Argentinian, who enjoyed far flung education, and ultimate domination on the links at Westwood Country Club, garnered respect and admiration. Fernando was a true phenomenon, with a gift for stimulating conversation. Adios, Fernando. Save me a place in the fun section.
