Edwin Suchicki Obituary

Edwin John Suchicki
1927-2016
Ed, 89, was born 11-17-27 in Newark, NJ, and passed away 11-21-16. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Kobs Suchicki; sons, Greg Savage (and wife Denise) and Steven Suchicki; grandchildren, Jason Savage, Kelly Frost (and husband Rob), and Natalie Savage; great-grandson, Willie Frost; and sister-in-law, Barbara Cantrell. Ed attended Manhattan College on a basketball scholarship ('Big Sooch'), and served in the Army Paratroopers at the end of WWII before returning to complete his BCE. He had a long and distinguished career as a civil engineer, starting with Edwards & Kelcey in Newark, and then in Houston for 32 years with the Texas Hwy Dept (now TxDOT) and 9 years with Brown & Root (now KBR). He received a number of awards for innovative bridge design and was responsible for many of the distinctive bridges throughout Houston. Ed married the love of his life, Audrey, in 1956, and soon thereafter settled in her hometown of Houston. He enjoyed (inter alia) tennis, fishing, eating out, telling (and receiving) jokes, and trips to Las Vegas, Lake Charles and Gulf Greyhound Park, with his friends and family. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, who lived a strong Christian life, exuding honesty, integrity and goodness. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Reach Unlimited (www.reachunlimited.org), the operator of the Group Home and Activity Center that his son Steven lives and participates in, or the charity of your choice. There will not be a memorial service; a private inurnment will be held at Houston National Cemetery.

My condolences to the family. Ed was my fathers boss and mentor for many years at the Texas Highway Dept. They were nicknamed Big Bird and Little Bird as there was a bit of a height difference. I remember Ed as a kind man with a great sense of humor.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to Audrey and the family. I worked with Ed at the Texas Highway Dept for over 30 years. Not only was he a super boss, but a wonderful friend. May he rest in peace.

Sincere condolences for your great loss. May the God who "binds up the brokenhearted" and "comforts all who mourn," sustain your family during this challenging time. Isaiah 61: 1, 2

My husband, Rodney and I had the pleasure of getting to know "Mr. Ed" while at his latest residence - Mrs. Lucy's Home Care. I would bring him communion on Sunday mornings and Mr. Ed was always so thrilled and enjoyed saying the Lord's Prayer together. He shared some interesting stories with us! We already miss Mr. Ed! Peace to your family.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
