Velma Lucas Obituary

VELMA LORENE LUCAS, 86, passed away November 10, 2008 in Pasadena, TX. She was born November 11, 1921 in Hicks, Texas to the late Tom and Jessie Lanford. She is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Avon Lucas, siblings, Laura, Walter B., Thomas and Betty Jo. Lorene answered to many names during her blessed life: "Enie," "Mama," "Grandma," and "Hidee." She was a proud daughter, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a strong homemaker with a servant's heart, spending much of her free time helping others. She often drove elderly friends and neighbors to their doctor's appointments and volunteered in the community. Lorene avoided the limelight, but, in 1999, she was honored as Deer Park's Christian Lay Woman of the Year. She was an early member of Deer Park United Methodist Church and a charter member of Deer Park's Order of the Eastern Star. She was also well-known in Deer Park for her famous pecan pie. Lorene leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Mary Ann Prather and husband Benton, sons, Douglas Lucas and wife Marjorie, Rodney Lucas, sister, Leona Penney and husband Harold, grandchildren, Matt Lucas and wife Kristina, Laura Lucas, Ashley Prather, Harlow Nieves and husband Elliot, great-grandchildren, Shane Prather, Sam Lucas, Emma Grace Lucas, and a host of other family members and friends. A visitation will be held at Grand View Funeral Home, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Thursday, November 13, 2008 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Celebration of Lorene's life will be held Friday November 14, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Deer Park United Methodist Church, 1300 East 13th St. Deer Park. Interment will follow at Grand View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations to the Deer Park United Methodist Church or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in honor of Gracie's Racers. I knew Mrs. Lucas through church. As a child shy of strangers, she was one of the few people that I loved talking to. She was always so friendly and interested in what I was doing. I thought of her as a surrogate grandmother. I am sorry I will not be able to come to the funeral. I still carry the $2 bill that she gave to all high school graduates. She was truly a special lady.

Dear Family, Lorene was my mother's cousin. Her name was Lizzie Lanford Borchgardt. We always enjoyed your Mom and Dad and some of you at the Lanford Family reunions. We are sad to hear of her death and extend our sincere sympathy to all of your family. We enjoyed reading the obituary and hope you will share the Pecan Pie recipe and any others that were her favorite so that we might print them in our Lanford Family Cookbook.
God Bless you all.

Lorene was a kind and gracious cousin to my late father, Alvin Lanford and to my mother Nelda. We will miss her stories of the Walter and Lucy Lanford family.

I'll bet the angels are lined up for miles waiting for a piece of that pecan pie!
"Mama" made everyone feel as if they were her own kin...oh, how we shall miss her!
As one of the many she adopted,
I send my love and sympathy to her dear family.
