George Hepburn(1921 - 2014)

George C. Hepburn, Jr. passed away peacefully on March 31, 2014. Born in Mason City, Iowa on August 15, 1921, he was the only child of George and Eda Hepburn. He is survived by his children: George Hepburn and wife Lesa; Margaret Hepburn; Jim Hepburn and wife Victoria; Jennifer Badalamenti and husband Anthony; and Elizabeth Abdalla. George has five grandchildren: Abby and Eddie Hepburn; Caroline and Catherine Badalamenti; and Jasmine Abdalla.
Raised in Milwaukee, George earned a BS in geology from Beloit College in 1943. After graduating from Naval OCS at Notre Dame, he trained as a meteorologist at the U.S. Naval Academy, ultimately serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Randolph (CV 15). During the war, he met his first wife, Peggy Aitken, a Navy WAVE. They married in 1947.
Following the war, as he was pursuing post-graduate studies at the University of Chicago, George was offered a job as an engineer with Schlumberger Well Surveying Corporation. Serving in positions of increasing responsibly in Schlumberger's wireline operations, George switched careers in 1971 to supervise the company's manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas. He retired 10 years later.
After Peggy's death in 1979, George married close family friend Roma Hill. They settled in Lafayette, Louisiana. For the next two decades, Roma and George traveled extensively until declining health curtailed their activities. Roma passed away in 2008, and George returned to Houston.
Always the scientist and engineer, George had a passion for family, rocks, weather and precision. His professional and personal friendships often overlapped. His closest buddies were men who, like himself, did things well.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to the Houston chapter of the . A memorial service will be held on April 17, 2014, at 1:30 pm at Grace Presbyterian church, 10221 Ella Lee Lane, Houston.
