JC Burnham age 74 went to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 30, 2012. JC was born in Houston, Texas December 15, 1937 the son of the late Julius Claude Burnham Sr. and Sarah Musgrove Burnham. JC was a graduate of Reagan High School where he excelled in athletics. He went on to attend his beloved University of Houston. In JC's words he was a graduate of the, "School of Hard Knocks." He was a hard worker starting at eleven in Stubbs Grocery Store. He worked for many years for General Motors
starting off in the mailroom. Throughout his time with General Motors he held eleven different positions. It was in 1973, he purchased Mearns Chevrolet Inc., which began his life in Liberty. Over the thirty plus years he added an Oldsmobile-Cadillac store and a Buick-Pontiac-GMC store and his son Bruce became the local Ford dealer. Due to some health issues, JC decided to sell his interests in his dealerships in 2000, to become a "Country Gentleman." In 1991, he met and wed his wife of twenty-one years Kathleen Walling Burnham, they spent the years growing a small farm, raising cattle and slow race horses.
JC was involved in numerous civic organizations throughout his thirty-nine years in Liberty. He served several terms on the Liberty-Dayton Chamber of Commerce and was president in 1990. He has served on the Board of Directors of Magnolia Ridge County Club, past vice president and director and life time vice president of Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, Board of Directors for Texas 4H Youth Development Foundation from 1994-2003, several terms on Liberty City Council, sponsored Kid Fish , supported the TVE youth auction, general manager for the TVE in the 1970's, board of directors for the Liberty-Dayton Hospital, started the Burnham Classic golf tournament which has raised over $450,000 for South Liberty State Center/ Tri-County MHMR, member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the Finance Committee, Board, Treasury, etc., received the "Citizen of the Year," award from the Liberty-Dayton Chamber of Commerce in 1982, received a "Community Builder Award" from the Liberty Masonic Lodge #48 AM/FM, served on the Chevrolet Dealer Council several times, served on the board of Liberty County Central Appraisal District and was chairman in 1994-1995, board of Sam Rayburn Municipal Power Agency, member of the Liberty Rotary Club
and a Paul Harris Fellow, life member of the American Quarter horse Association, life member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Life member of the "100 Club", life member of the Texas 4H Alumni Association, member of the Liberty Elks Club
#2109, member of the Liberty County Texas Farm Bureau, member of the Texas Thoroughbred Association, and a member of the Southwest Cattle Raisers Association. In JC's words, "this pretty much sums up seventy-four plus years of my life. Hopefully there is more to come."
JC was preceded in death by his parents as well as an Infant son Jason Claude Burnham and his brothers R.L. Burnham and Kenneth Wayne Burnham. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of twenty-one years Kathleen Burnham, son Bruce Burnham and wife Connie, daughter Cyrese Jezek and husband Mike, sister Mary Helen Jobes and husband Don, nephews Ken Burnham Jr and wife Constance, Robert Dunn and wife Rhonda, niece Julie Rae Dunn, in-laws Jim and JoAnne Walling, three grandchildren, Brooke Erin Burnham, Jordann Jezek, and Meghann Jezek. In addition he leaves numerous extended family and friends. JC will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held Sunday November 4, 2012 from 5-8PM at First United Methodist Church of Liberty. Funeral services will be held at 10:30AM, Monday, November 5, 2012 at the church with burial to follow in Cooke Memorial Cemetery.
