Jimmy (Jim) Free

Jimmy (Jim) Free, 73 of Houston, Texas, passed away at his home on December 5, 2013.
Jim was born in Natchez, MS on December 10, 1939 growing up in Boonville, MS with his grandparents. He graduated from Boonville High School in 1958 and entered The United States Navy. Jim completed his basic training and was stationed at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, MS and completed his tour of duty at The United States Naval Air Station in Kingsville, Texas in 1962 where he married Deanna Wright. After completing his military career, Jim joined the Kingsville Police Department where he served as a patrolman while completing his BBA from Texas A&I University in 1968.
After moving to Houston, TX in 1968, he met and married Charlotte on February 14, 1969. Jim joined Dresser Industries not long after moving to Houston and became President of Dresser Central Credit Union which later became Southern Star Credit Union. Jim served as the President until his retirement on March 31, 2006. Jim continued serving the credit union members as a Board Member. He also served as a board member for several banking institutions in the Texas Region during his tenure.
Jim enjoyed being involved in coaching his sons' youth sports, was an avid bowler for many years, enjoyed shooting pool, reading, and became politically active in local and state elections. He used his retirement years keeping up with family and friends as well as his genealogy work, and desire in recent years to learn to play guitar. Jim's hobbies included his music, especially as an avid Elvis Fan, basketball, baseball, and football.
Jim is survived by his wife Charlotte of 44 years; daughter Dana (Ben) Simmons; son James ( Ann) Free; son Brian (Laura) Free; step-son Nathan ( Linda) Green; step-son Rick Green; sisters Betty West, Barbara Helpling and Charlene Davis; brother Roy (Debbie) McCarter; sister-in-law Dorothy McCarter; grandchildren Amberly (Mark), Jeffery, Hannah, J.D., Bridget, Liza, David, Daniel, Kayle, Brianna, Aaron, Clint (Lacy); great-grandchildren Jordan, Landon, Kegan, Lexi, Colton and Presley and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his mother Katie (Free) McCarter; his grandparents, Mattie & Sam Free; and his brother Harvey McCarter.
A memorial service will be held on February 01, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. CST at Epiphany Lutheran Church located at 14423 West Rd, Houston, Texas 77041. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the in Jim's name. Condolences to the family may be left at woodlawnfh.com.
