Roberts Retired USAF, 94, of Bright Star Arkansas died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, in a Texarkana hospital.
Col. Roberts was born Mar. 22, 1918, In Dalby Springs,Texas.
He served 27 Years in the United States Air force beginning in July 1942 at Kelly Army Air Force Base, San Antonio Texas. He joined the 61st Squadron of the 56th Fighter Group and flew 73 combat missions in a P-47 Thunderbolt over France and England between April, 1943 and April 1944. He retired in 1966 to ranching in Bright Star Arkansas.
He had been a Master Mason since 1957 and served as Master, Treasurer and Secretary of Olive Branch Lodge No.136 for many years. He served on the Bright Star Arkansas School Board. He attended Texarkana College from 1935 through 1937. Col. Roberts has been honored as a Distinguished Alumni at Texarkana College for his service and contributions. He and Wilma were among the first to endow a President's Scholarship with the College Foundation in honor of his parents. He served on the Steering Committee that helped establish the TC Alumni & Friends Association. He and Wilma were two of the first to join the Association as life members.
He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma of 64 years, father and mother, A.M. and Vera Roberts, and sister, Gladys Estes.
He is survived by nephew, Alvie Estes and wife Ann of Houston, Texas; nieces, Lillian Rachal, of Houston Texas, Barbara Adams Ashley and husband Larry of Bright Star, Arkansas; and numerous great; great- great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the Hanner Funeral Chapel with Bro. Walter Burnett officiating, and masonic rites.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Hanner Funeral Service.
Interment will be in Olive Branch Cemetery, Bright Star, Arkansas, with full military rites. Guest registry is at www.hannerfuneralservice.com
