Mary - Melissa's life intertwined with mine, as wives of the Hoiland boys. We celebrated family events and holidays together, mostly in Minneapolis, often orchestrated by our mother-in-law. Boating was a favored activity, as were lavish birthday parties for Edward, with ponies. She encouraged the cousins to keep in touch. My boys are 2 and 4 years older than Edward. I had thought Edward would get the hand-me-downs, but Melissa's style-consciousness would not allow that, and to this day, Edward is a testiment to his mother's influence. Plus, Edward outgrew our boys early on.
There were trips to Mexico, parties at country clubs, gatherings around the fire ring at the Minnetonka house, Mother's Day brunches, charity polo matches organized, and love of gardening and flowers.
Melissa produced the best Christmas photo cards - involving western and nautical themes.
She was a huge hit at dinner parties, where her wit and conversation skills shone. Plus, of course, the food was great.
She accentuated the positive and wouldn't listen to others' complaints. (Right-on.)
Melissa had hoped to make a trip to Minneapolis this month of May. We would have met for dinner, and more. I wanted to hear about her last few years in Texas. I will miss her occasional e-mails and visits.

Melissa was a very resourceful independent woman. Like all of us, she was shaped by events from her past. My recollections of her are that she was born to be a sales person and event planner. A great story teller of her life adventures, and there were many. She was fun, elegant, and passionate with the heart of a philanthropist. Melissa possessed a great love for her son and her former husband. She lived by her values, but often in an unconventional world that was not always kind to her. Peace

Dear Mary and Randy....I remember so many good and great times at your house....especially our senior year when Missy, Pat Mosley and I walked to your house every single day for lunch! I remember when she flew to Chicago to perform my wedding and how many years later, when i was diagnosed with cancer she was there for me. She was a bright light despite any difficulties of her own. I am praying for all of you and remembering her with lots of love.

I am so sorry to hear of this and all my prayers go out to the family. May the peace of Jesus be upon all of you. I don't ever recall calling her Melissa but she was one of the kindness and bright spirited individuals I had the pleasure in knowing. I am so sorry.

Mrs Worrell, I was sorry to read about the loss of Melissa. I remember her as a darling young child because many years ago we were neighbors on Lampton Circle in Bellaire. Melissa, and in fact the entire family, was lovely, sweet and well mannered. I hope you have comfort and peace from God. Carolyn Robertson
