Meredith Gartner Obituary

Meredith Ingram Gartner died on the 19th of October 2012 in Houston, Texas. She was 71. Meredith was born in Houston on the 15th of May 1941, the only child of Ernest Willie and Mary Doll Oldham Ingram. She graduated from Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in 1959 and obtained a degree in English from Rice University in 1963. She married Donald H. Gartner, Jr. in 1964, and they had two daughters, Kelly and Susan. Before having children, Meredith taught first grade at Rummel Creek Elementary; later, she taught third grade at Briargrove Elementary, retiring in 2001.
Meredith loved and cared deeply about her family and friends. She was a grammar advisor, consummate list-maker, and champion shopper. She delighted in finding just the right gift for a new baby or a friend's birthday. Meredith instilled an ardor for reading and learning in her daughters, who promise to continue her legacy with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, cherishing recent trips to Paris and Hawaii. An elder at St. Philip Presbyterian Church, Meredith volunteered with Kids' Meals and coordinated the annual Christmas gift drive for low-income families.
Preceded in death by her parents and husband, Meredith is survived by her daughter, Kelly Gartner of Houston; and her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Pete Leonardson and their children, Anna Jane and Luke of Seattle. Her little dog, Coco, was her devoted companion.
We adored our mother. She was thoughtful, generous, courageous, and resilient. She was a two-time cancer survivor before succumbing to peritoneal cancer after a three-year battle. Mom participated in a research study at MD Anderson; we knew her disease was incurable, but the study drug and Mom's determination enabled her to live almost three years after her diagnosis, granting her precious time with her grandchildren. We are indebted to all the doctors, nurses, and staff at MD Anderson, particularly to Dr. Jennifer Wheler and Forlisa Nauling, RN, in the Clinical Center for Targeted Therapy and to the Palliative Care team for their commitment to finding new ways to treat difficult cancers and to manage the symptoms of treatment. Houston Hospice was invaluable during Mom's last days. So many friends and family members sustained our mom and us during her illness, but we are especially grateful to Susan Gartner, Jane Lee, Ariel Washington, and Margie Johnson.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until eight o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 22nd of October, in the drawing room at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 23rd of October, at St. Philip Presbyterian Church, 4807 San Felipe Road in Houston, where the Rev. Dr. John W. Wurster is to officiate.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX, 77210-4486, www.mdanderson.org/gifts.

Dear Ingram and Gartner Family,
I am one of the
"Lewis Girls."
Meredith was one of my mentors, as I grew up.
She was a great and valuable person to learn from.
I learned to Ballroom Dance from Don, at the dance studio, while in High School. I still love to dance!
Mother, K.Lewis, and Mary Doll, were close friends, and were there to help us whenever needed.
Meredith´s obituary notice appeared in my sister, Margaret´s email, today, and she passed it on to the sisters.
With Love,
Helen Lewis January

Susan and Kelly, Your mom was a great friend, a good listner, and a mentor.
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you and your family.

Dear Ingrams and Gartners. I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Meredith and know she will be missed. I knew her as a lovely young lady and friend of my sister. The Ingram house was a bright spot on our block when I was growing up. My mother would have coffee with Mrs. Ingram and as a little girl I was so honored the day I was allowed to call her, Mary Doll.
All the best to all of you.

Dear Susan and Kelly, My 4 sisters and I grew up on Banks Street with your dear, beautiful mom. We were known collectively as "The Lewis Girls" and your mom and your grand parents were like a favorite cousin, aunt and uncle to us. Meridith's sweet, gentle and compassnate nature endeared her to the entire neighborhood and especially to our mother, as I remember. Your grand parents would seem to always be happy to see any of us as we trumped through their living room while they were trying to watch TV.

I remember your Mother and my two older sisters being constant companions during their Poe School days. Mary Doll (I always just loved her name) and Mother frequently spent afternoons sitting at our kitchen table having coffee, discussing "the price of cotton" when we asked, and maybe shelling peas or breaking and de-stringing a bowlful of green beans. They would share recipes, news of the day or just remember "the good old days" while we kids came and went to each others' homes at will.

It was such a sweet, wonderful time there in our own little world on Banks Street. If we have any photos to share we'll share them here or with you at a later date.

My heart goes out to you and the entire family. It was good to read that Meredith had the year to enjoy her grand children.

May you all feel God's loving and comforting arms around you as you grieve your loss as well as the world's. A world without Meredith in it will never be as sweet.

May God bless you and keep you during these difficult days,

Kathleen Lewis Murray
(The 4th of the "Lewis Girls")

Dear Family of two long loved friends -

I was in your Dad's homeroom at Lamar and knew your Mother well...being in many classes together.

We were classmates at Lamar at the apogee of our early lives; ready to begin the Great Adventure. The Gartner's "adventured" grandly.

You all must be so very proud to stand in their line ... it would be hard to remember two finer folks.

I'm so sorry for the hurt and suffering your family has endured and, in this hour, particularly for what must have been quite trying for your dear Mother.

I've no doubt that at this moment she is standing with a great host in a place where these is no more darkness and there are no more tears.

With Great Respect -

Jon Hugh Fleming
