Vince Matthews

Dr. Vince Matthews, Jr. A lifetime resident of Houston, Edwin Vince Matthews, Jr. ,76, passed away in his home on December 19, 2013 following a long illness. Vince attended Henderson Elementary, Jackson Junior and Austin Senior High Schools. His friends will remember Vince as quarterback for the team vying for the Texas State Football Championship. Vince was named Most Outstanding Football Player in Texas that year and accepted a scholarship to the University of Texas. His passing success in the memorable TX-OU game in 1958 is history. Texas won 15-14; Coach Darrell Royal's first win against OU.
Dr. Matthews graduated from Texas Dental School in 1965 and ran a successful dental practice in Houston for over 40 years.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Shirley Matthews, his stepdaughters, Tamara and Melissa, as well as sister Oma Jean Stevenson; children Vic, Lea and Allan Matthews and Dotsy Balentine; grandchildren Will, Kit, Kimmy and Marissa Matthews, Tiffany Bastow and Lauren Balentine; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Monday, December 23 at 2 PM at Forest Park Westheimer with visitation one hour prior.
