William Matthews

William Earl
Matthews, 89, went home to be in the loving arms of his Lord on January 14, 2014. Known as "Wild Bill" to those who knew and loved him best, he was fiercely independent and believed in trying to live each day to its fullest. Born on September 16, 1924, Bill grew up in the East End of Houston. His mother and father and his beloved brother Ed, who was lost over the China Sea during WW II, precede him in death. His beloved wife Donna and her extended family, two daughters, Judith Ann Adams and Joan Matthews Jennings, and their families survive him. Bill attended the University of Houston, was a proud veteran of the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, and worked for 39 years in the oil and gas business, retiring from Gulf Oil Company and later Enron. Bill lived in Country Place in Pearland for over 30 years, and it was there that he met and married Donna Green. Bill and Donna shared an active life with their many friends from church and Country Place. Bill had a zest for life and continually challenged himself, even fulfilling his long-held wish of skydiving on his 80th birthday. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to VITAS Hospice, 3130 Eastside, Suite 200, Houston, TX 77098 or First United Methodist Church of Pearland, 2314 N. Grand Blvd., Pearland, TX 77581.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held on January 20th at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Pearland. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.claytonfuneralhomes.com.
