Michael Petrizzo Obituary

Michael Patrick Petrizzo passed away peacefully at his home in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Mr. Petrizzo was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 26, 1922, the sixth of seven children of Michael and Erminia Petrizzo (born DeStefano). As a Brooklyn native, Mr. Petrizzo's first visit to Houston was in 1944 during his assignment at Ellington Field while serving as a U.S. Air Force Second Lieutenant during World War II. During his military service, he was trained to pilot the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator, and became a Navigator on the B-29 Super Fortress. The day before carrying out orders to bomb Japan, Japan surrendered. Mr. Petrizzo continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve after active duty and retired as a Major.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brooklyn College in New York, he accepted an opportunity as an accountant with Lykes Shipping Company in New York. In 1956, he was transferred to the Lykes office in Houston. He later accepted a position as an accountant with KCOH Radio Station. He was elected General Manager of KCOH in 1976. In February 1976, he and four partners purchased KCOH. Under Mr. Petrizzo's leadership and guidance, KCOH expanded from being a daytime only station to a twenty-four/seven broadcast station with 5000 watts of power each day.
Mr. Petrizzo is survived by his wife Armida (born Bellarosa) of 62 years of marriage, and four children - Michael Joseph Petrizzo and wife Lana of Houston, Texas, Joan Ann Cramer and husband Mike of Houston, Texas, Jerry Petrizzo of Houston, Texas, and Tom Petrizzo and wife Teri of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Mr. Petrizzo has one grand-daughter Alexandra Cramer also of Houston, Texas.
Mr. Petrizzo was an active member of the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Greater Houston.
The family would like to express its gratitude to the caregivers of Christus Hospice and Visiting Angels. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Christus Hospice or Visiting Angels.
Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 13, 2012 at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 6700 Ferris, Bellaire, TX 77401.

To the Family and Friends of Mr. Petrizzo and fans of KCOH, I offer my sincere prayers and condolences. I met Mr. P at KCOH, and we had several conversations at the Hyatt and other venues. The one thing apparent in his conversations was that he LOVED people.
I guess I felt the connection because he, like me were born in the month of September. For all he's done for the city of Houston, and the staff and fans of KCOH, I want to thank GOD for loaning him to us, he fought the good fight of faith. Now may you rest in peace MR. P. Thanks for the memories.

Mr. Petrizzo was a very kind man. I worked with him over the years and always found him to be engaging, professional and interested in telling both sides of the story. He took KCOH to great heights and will be missed by those of us who worked with him.

To the family of Mr.Petrizzo I did not know him but as a listner of KCOH radio I just want to say thanks for keeping the station to its form and what you did to make KCOH the station that it is today. The way you kept KCOH a force in the community I know that you were a great husband, father, neighbor, employer, and it is a known fact that you were a good business man the way you kept KCOH radio station. So in closing let me say to you family as they would say about the beautiful looking glass studio on Almeda Mr.Petrizzo is looking down on you from Heaven from that beautiful place where the streets are paved with gold. May God give you the Petrizzo family the strength in this your hour of need.

I've known Mike's Dad since I was a little kid playing baseball in the Bellaire baseball leagues with Mike. Mike & I also went to grade school, HS, and college together. Most everytime when I went to an Astro game I arrived 1 or 2 innings late, Mr Petrizzo would shake his head at me & tell me I barely made it before he closed up.
My heart goes out to the Michael Petrizzo family, I know God our Father has blessed his soul !

For the longest time, I thought Mr. Petrizzo lived at the Astrodome. I met Jerry's father there and that is where I always saw him. I never saw him at the house!
I could tell he was a honorable, hard-working, and decent man.
My condolences to you, Jerry, your mom and siblings. May he rest in eternal peace.
